There's no need for anyone to be hyperbolic about coronavirus.
Or, for that matter, any public health crisis that potentially, or definitely in this case, affects the world's population.
The reason that we know it must be fine, apart from the very reassuring briefing from POTUS from the lectern where we learned, amongst other things:The President was right! This can't be stressed enough. Whatever it is we are talking about, Donald Trump was right.
Because of all we've done, the risk to the American people remains very low.
Don't listen to those 'deep state' people at the CDC, specifically, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, telling you that 'We expect we will see community spread in this country.
The vaccine is coming along well. And in speaking to the doctors, we think this is something that we can develop fairly rapidly, a vaccine for the future and coordinate with the support of our partners.and this is despite that 'never-trumper', deep-state, 'scientist' guy saying 'At the earliest an efficacy trial would take an additional six to eight months. So although this is the fastest we have ever gone from a sequence of a virus to a trial, it still would not be any applicable to the epidemic unless we really wait about a year to a year and a half.
Phht! What do they know? What are your qualifications to make that determination, Mr?......Oh! Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at NIH....Anyway, moving on....
It's a little like the regular flu that we have flu shots for. And we'll essentially have a flu shot for this in a fairly quick manner.Er, Mr President, remember the bit above about not having 'shots' fairly quick? Unless you mean two years is quick for a virus that has, to date, infected over 80,000 people and claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 in 3 months.
Enough messing around.
Trump budget for the 2020 fiscal year was to slash CDC funding by 19% or c. $1.3bn.
This is in addition to a WH proposal to cut 17% or c. $100m from federal spending on infectious diseases which spread from animals to humans such as, yes of course, coronavirus.Previous to this money grab, in 2018, Trump fired the government’s entire pandemic response chain of command, including the White House management infrastructure. This renders the American government unable to respond to this crisis. Not just unable to effectively respond but to respond at all.
During his press conference, Trump referred to those experts fired as though they a set of ball players sat on the bench just waiting to be called in.
In 2014 during the Ebola outbreak President Obama completely understood that it required the whole of government, every department, to deal with such a situation and when it comes to money, for every dollar spent now it will save ten times, at least, having to try to react to the spread of a highly infectious and potentially worldwide, catastrophic disease.
Trump, never one to miss an opportunity to wriggle out of his responsibility and blame someone, anyone, else, has decided to move aside Alex Azar, head of Health and Human Services and instal Mike Pence, evangelical and infamous homophobe, VP as front man for the response to the coronavirus outbreak.Putting aside that Azar in a 'normal' WH would not be in his job, Pence has even fewer qualifications for dealing with this situation.
The most worrying part of this is that as an evangelical, Pence really believes in the 'end time' and of the 'rapture'. He really does!
This is something that sets aside American evangelicals from a lot of other religious denominations and faiths. So, for him, this is something he has been expecting and looking forward to his entire life. What are these peoples incentive to protect and support anyone that is in danger or has been struck by this virulent disease? None. None at all.The corruption of government by faith is something that needs, and will receive, a spotlight but for now let's continue.
In the UK and Europe, there has been a very different way of responding to the outbreak. The EU commissioner for health and food safety, Stella Kyriakides said,
This is the time for facts, not fearand added that the EU is ready to support member states and the international community to tackle the disease.
The UK responded in a similar fashion. The UK prime minister's official spokesman said,
We will be led by the advice from public health and medical experts and will take steps which they feel are required to best protect the British public.
and,
We are well prepared for UK cases, we are using tried and tested procedures to prevent further spread and the NHS is extremely well prepared and used to managing infections.
So, at least there are nations and governmental organisations that are responding to this using the tried and tested systems used before. They are also going to rely on facts and findings from experts in the field.
Whilst it is small comfort, the medical professionals and government officials that are left in place in the US will undoubtedly respond in the way that people in these professions always do. They will put aside any personal feelings on the situation, they will do anything that they can to work with other colleagues, organisations and systems.
So, whilst this is clearly a concerning moment there are medical, scientific and political expertise that are already, in spite of their government, fighting to bring this under control and to help those unfortunate enough to have contracted it already.
